Excursion number one
An optional detour is to walk to the beautiful church of Santa Maria de Eunate:   This solitary little church on the road between Pamplona and Puente la Reina is a 12th century, octagonal church thought to have been built by the Knight Templars. Nobody knows why it was erected in this out-of-the way field. It is one of the best preserved Romanesque churches in Navarre.

Excursion number two
If time permits, we can visit the Castle of Clavijo near Logroño:  Legend tells us that is the site where St James was first seen on a white horse at the Battle of Clavijo, fighting with the Christian soldiers against the Moors. This victory put an end to the surrender of 100 maidens a year to the Moors and it was after this battle that he earned the name "Santiago Matamoros' - the Moor Slayer

Excursion number three
An optional excursion from Cacabelos to the World Heritage site of 'Las Medulas' - a spectacular landscape which was once the most important open cast gold mine in the Roman Empire.  The village of Las Medulas is on the Camino Invierno route and if time permits, you can hike one of the shorter Medulas trails to see the enormous caves excavated by the Roman gold miners.

Excursion number four
Included in the cost of the walk is an excursion from Ambasmestas to the mountain-top village of O Cebreiro for breakfast.  This is a listed village with ancient Celtic Pollazas - thatched houses - and a church that is home to the Holy Grail. Cebreiro is the resting place of Don Elias Valina Sampedro, the priest who was responsible for the re-animation the Camino in the 1970s.

Excursion number five
An optional excursion from Santiago to Finisterre during the day or at night to watch the sunset over the Atlantic at the End of the World.  If there is sufficient interest, we can include a picnic basket of tapas and wine!  If you are spending an extra day in Santiago, you could arrange a day trip to Finisterre and walk up to the lighthouse where you will find the last Camino marker at the End of the World
