The Mystical Meseta
6 - 16 June 2025 €950 (Single supplement €395) 182 km, 11 days - Burgos to Leon Day 1: You will meet your group in Burgos. The following day you'll start the 182 km walk from Burgos to Leon, averaging 18.2km per day. The shortest stage is 10km and the longest is 23km. We walk in spring when everything is green, the wildflowers are spectacular and the European stork have returned to their huge nests to raise their young. Day 2: Burgos to Rabé de las Calzadas 13.0 You will walk on gentle trails through farmlands, woods and indigenous oaks to Rabe de las Calzadas. (Arab of the Roads) Carry extra water and sunscreen as there is little shade on this stage. Day 3: Hontanas 18,7 After walking for a few hours you might imaginre that there are no villages on this stretch but the tower and steeples of the church in Hontanas will suddenly appear before you like a mirage! Day 4: Castrojeriz 10,0 On the way to Castrojeriz you will pass the enigmatic ruins of the San Anton monastery where medieval monks healed people with St Anthony's fire. The town of Castrojeriz wraps arpund the hillside with an imposing 9th C castle on the pinacle of the hill. Day 5: Boadilla del Camino 19,5 After following the trail across an open plain there is a steep climb to the Alto Mosterales, which offers panoramic views of the platteau. This is where the flat plains of the meseta begin. The 14th C, Gothic La Asuncion church in Boadilla has a beautiful baptismal font. Day 6: Villalcázar de Sirga 19,5 When you reach Frómista you'll follow the 18th-century Canal de Castilla. Listen out for the frogs! We also recommend visiting the beautiful 11th C Romaneaque Church of St Martin. Day 7: Calzadilla de la Cueza 23,2 Today the camino leads you along the old Roman road, Via Aquitania, built to link Bordeaux in France with Astorga, frequently used by French pilgrims on their way to Santiago. Day 8: Sahagún 22,8 After leaving Calzadilla de la Cueza there is a short climb for a km or 2. The camino path moves away from the road, continues through oak trees before coming out to open farmland. Today you will enter the province of León and will to Sahagún (pronounced without the 'h') Day 9: El Burgo Ranero 17,8 Five kilometers from Sahagun is a small hamlet, Calzada del Coto. In the early 2000s trees were planted on the left-hand side of the road from Sahagún to Mansilla de las Mulas. They were planted about 10 metre apart and provide shade in the afternoon for pilgrims on the path. A few km further is Bercianos del Real Camino and another 7km is El Burgo. Day 10: Mansilla de las Mulas 19,2 Today is an easy flat walk through a forest and the small village of Reliegos to the town which kept their 'Hands on the sadlle of the Mules" Mansilla de las Mulas. Take extra water on this stretch as there are very few opportunities for provsions. |
Let us know if you want to spend an extra night in Burgos at the start, and an extra night in Leon at the end.
Day 11: León 18,9
Today's stage is not the most scenic of your trip but you will closely follow the the N-120 road and it will be a flat, easy walk. You will pass through many villages so there is no need to carry extras today. Entering Leon is like any other big city with light industrial areas on the outskirts. Sunrises and sunsets are particularly magical on the meseta, painting the sky in dramatic hues of orange, pink, and purple. The light play on the fields creates an ever-changing tapestry of shadows and highlights throughout the day.
